Standards - We will be working on the Common Core Standards in the subject areas. We will also be using some modules, lessons developed by New York State, to present those standards in E.L.A. and Math at various times this year. We will not be following our books page by page as a result. At times we might not use a textbook at all. Textbooks are just one tool used within the classroom along with other sources to present the common core standards for third grade.
Grades - Students grades are a combination of class work, participation, homework, projects, quizzes, and tests. These grades are weighted as follows:
E.L.A. /Math /Social /Science /Religion
tests/quizzes - 35%
homework - 15%
classwork/projects - 30%
Tests/Quizzes -We will let you know via agendas four to five days before any quiz or test. Spelling and vocabulary tests will be on Fridays every two weeks. Dates for these tests are on the vocabulary definition sheet that is given to your child every two weeks. Please sign all quizzes or tests and return them to school. We will keep them until some time in May, before exams, when we will return them to the student so they can study them. Spelling and vocabulary tests do not have to be signed or returned.
Agendas - We spend time each day going over with the children their assignments that are to be recorded in their agenda. We check to see that they are writing down their assignments and then initial them. Please take a moment to check their agendas and initial them.
Homework - Homework is assigned on a nightly basis. Homework assignments are to be completed and brought to school the day it is due. We use a 3,2,1, or 0 when grading homework assignments. 3 - the assignment is complete and turned in on time 2 - the assignment is incomplete and/or one day 1 - the assignment is two or more days late 0 - the assignment is never turned in This grade will appear on the assignment paper. Besides the 3,2,1,or 0 system , there will be times when a homework assignment also receives a numerical grade. This grade will also be on the paper. Not all homework assignments will receive numerical grade. Being prepared with their classwork, participating in discussions, answering questions, and following class rules for creating a good work environment are all reflected in a student’s participation grade.
Math - Below are some online sites that can be used for practice of basic math facts and concepts this year. Practicing basic addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts are important. Please spend some time reviewing these facts with your child frequently.
Birthdays -We will celebrate your child’s special day with song and a treat that you can send in if you desire. Due to allergies, our classroom is a peanut/ tree nut free room. We encourage treats like fruit, veggies, or a non-edible treat. A wonderful site to check for nut free treats is SnackHealthy.com There are 16 students in my classroom. For those birthdays that occur over the weekend or vacation time, please let me know when you would like to celebrate the birthday.
Absences - When your child is absent, Miss Doyle and I will send home work when requested. Please be sure to send in an excuse when returning to school.
Contact Information - Any questions please feel free to contact us through our school emails.
